Place Random quotes, quips, jokes, phrases, or HTML clips
anywhere within your page content.

Installation Overview:

1. Setting some options at the beginning of the script files (*.pl)
2. Using FTP to upload all the files
3. Setting permissions on the files
4. Testing the script

Here's How!

1. Using a text editor like textpad, or notepad, open the .pl script
Change the path to perl so that it's configured for your server.
It's usually:

Make changes to the variables at the top as well:
$html_start = "<b>"; # is always displayed at the beginning of the quote
$html_end = "</b>"; # is always displayed at the end of the quote
$random_file = "random_text.txt"; # the file in which all of your random text phrases are stored.
$delimiter = "\n\%\%\n"; # separates each group of html or quotes

Also place your quotesin the random_text.txt file.

2. Use an FTP program like WS_FTP or CuteFTP (just some examples I'm aware of) and
upload the files to your server.
It's easiest to put everything in the CGI-BIN.

3. Set permissions (CHMOD) on the *.pl file so it's executable. (755).
The owner should be able read, write, and execute.
The group should be able to read, and execute.
Also, other should be able to read, and execute.

Set permissions on the text file, and the content folder so it's editable.
(This is 777).
The owner should be able read, write, and execute.
The group should be able read, write, and execute.
Also, other should be able to read, write, and execute.

4. Insert the following into a text file and rename it to test.shtml:
<!--#exec cgi="/cgi-bin/"-->

5. Place the above HTML clip in any page that you want a random quote.
Be sure the page has a Server Side Include extension (.shtml), or
that you have enabled SSI on all html pages. You may need your site
administrator to enable this feature.

That's it! You're set! Let me know if you have problems.

What People Say

Site Skinner $0
Add to Cart It is very cool having lots of different 'looks' for people to choose from on my site. I am one of those people who like to keep changing my site, and now when I do that, it doesn't mean I have to lose my old 'look.' People can switch back and forth between skins easily! Thanks for a great script.Scott
